I Got Punched in the Face. An Unexpected Lesson...


I'm about 12 years old and I'm on my back on the floor of a huge gymnasium.

My eyes are watering. I feel blood trickling down my cheek.

It was my first martial arts tournament and I'd just been punched square in the nose.

I'm sure the kid who hit me was just a normal boy. But in my memory's eye he looks like he'd grown up wrestling grizzlies and eating 24oz. ribeyes with a shot of bourbon.

I'm staring up at the blinding lights on the ceiling as the referee's head comes into view. A silhouette haloed by the lights.

"You all right, kid?" he asks.

If I say anything he'll hear in my shaky voice that I'm crying, so I just nod.

He hands me a tissue and walks away.

A moment later I hear him yell out to the scorekeepers:

"NO POINT! No point awarded! Unnecessary contact!"

In no-contact tournaments the idea is to get close to hitting someone but not actually do it. If you can launch your fist – or foot – and get it within a few inches of your opponent you get a point.

Simple rule but rather hard to accomplish.

It requires quite good control. And many kids – and adults as I learned in later tournaments – don't have that particular skill nailed down.

"Control" gets a bad name these days. For example, I'm sure you've heard "control is just an illusion" a few dozen times in your lifetime, yeah?

Makes me roll my eyes every time because the truth is...

Control exists on a spectrum and requires context.

If you can gently toss a tennis ball to your waggy dog, you've got some semblance of control. Good job.

If your gentle toss haphazardly becomes a 90-miles-an-hour fastball then smashes through your neighbor's kitchen window, there's some work to be done.

Business can be like this too. If you don't know how to control your business, the feast-or-famine equation becomes all too real.

In the next few weeks, I'm launching something that might help with that.

It's just...a little system I guess. A common-sense and rather simple system I use in my own business every single day. Same system I've used for almost every client I've had since 2008.

It's a way to get some control back over your business, income, etc. Kind of like a faucet you turn on and off.
