The Deadly Laser Pointers of Business Doom

Cats love laser pointers.

(Although I'm convinced laser pointers were built more for humans than for cats.)

But the cat never catches that red dot, do they?

So after a while it always ends the same:

The cat lays down to lick its feet with that mighty attitude of "Well I wasn't really trying that hard anyway."

And the human with the laser gets bored.

That's internet marketing strategy these days:

"Just do everything. Be everywhere. Chase the dots. Eventually something will work out."

Yeah sometimes but usually not. Because doing the wrong thing over and over is just wrongness multiplied.

That's expensive. And time consuming. And worst of all...it just feels so damn defeating.

I could not count on all my fingers and toes the people I've known who disappeared off the internet because they didn't make it.

Even some of my friends who were doing amazingly well got distracted. They chased another red dot, never caught it, and worked themselves right out of business.

It almost happened to me too. I picked a style of business that was extremely lucrative for me. Doing $12k per month was great...but I hated my life.

I was chasing the dots (a lot of them) and it really wasn't worth it.

What saved me was going back to the simple things that meshed with the life I wanted to live.

So what does work?

Honestly...a lot stuff. I'm not a one-size-fits-all kinda guy and never will be. There are lots of ways to do business. The important factor is how those ways fit in with you, your lifestyle, your family, your time.

But I'll tell you my absolute favorite way to do business online.

It's my favorite because it works. It's fast. It's fun. It's duplicatable. It scales well.

It's almost entirely automated so doesn't require your presence.

It has very few moving parts so doesn't break.

It runs on common sense (not luck, magic, or laser pointer batteries).

And best of all...it's simple & fluid enough that I use it with all of my clients across a gazillion different niches.

The bird's eye view of the plan is:

  • Traffic source
  • Build one simple tactical funnel
  • Get people off social media and onto your email list
  • Sell them something small but mighty at your earliest convenience
  • Rinse & repeat

That's too simple really and I don't expect you to just jump into action with that. There a lot of details that go into so I'm keeping it short for email purposes.

The magic is really in how each particular step is accomplished and how you connect the dots.

A lot more on that in the coming weeks. For now I just wanted to preach to the choir (because I know you already know this):

Beware the red dots. Pick a method that fits you well. Make it work.

If it's not working...get in touch. Maybe I can help.

Office worker staring at a clock

My wife and I recently moved into a new house. The yard is basically a miniature rainforest. Roughly one wild acre of grass, reeds, ferns, rocks, a black bear, a trillion birds, three two fairly domesticated deer, and one far less domesticated mountain lion. If I don’t keep on top of things the yard will soon swallow our house. Then the town. Then the entire west coast. So every couple weeks I get out there with a mower and weed-whacker and take care of business for 5 or 6 hours. The net...

Authority figure saying, "Tsk tsk, naughty naughty."

During the pandemic, a client of mine woke up to find she'd been blacklisted. She'd been "naughty" you see. Said something absolutely ridiculous like getting out for some sun and vitamin D might be good for one's health. The Administration at the time said, "Ah hell nah. Not on my watch." Next morning... Her Instagram account...gone. Facebook account...gone. YouTube account...gone. She lost 2.5 million people from her audience overnight. (Her husband lost his stuff as well via association.)...

Differentiation in a Saturated Market

A few years back I found myself sitting at an elegant table. In front of me on a pristine white tablecloth are three gorgeous little mini cakes. One white, one pink, one almost black. My friends were getting married soon and had enlisted my help sampling dessert options. The lucky day had come. I'm about to eat cake. I pick the dark one first because obviously it's chocolate and I neeeeed it in me. "Ohh muh gohh thash good," I mumble. I bite into the white one next thinking vanilla will be a...
